Summary:
Our research shows the role of social entrepreneurship in transforming “forgotten territories” into “socially innovative environments” as a response to the fight against poverty. Poverty (Sen, 1999) is being deprived of the freedom to choose and have a decent standard of living as understood by most people. Acquiring individual capabilities is not sufficient to respond to this challenge. It is also necessary to increase the collective capabilities and move towards a notion of territorial development that considers economic, social and environmental questions. We suggest a concept that extends the notion of “innovative environments” (developed by the GREMI) and that we call “socially innovative environments.” Thanks to their mission, business model and management, social enterprises act as “catalysts” to make the development of the territories not only more innovative but also more inclusive. Our comparative study between Morocco and Vietnam will shed light on the difference in this role in terms of the specificities of each country.Key words: social enterprise, socially innovative environment, fight against poverty, forgotten territories, emerging countries.
